Bangladesh 177/3 (40.0 ov)

The Bangladesh spinners gave their side an excellent chance of taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series by dismissing New Zealand for 173 in the third one-day international at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. The hosts' slow bowlers shared eight wickets between them, taking control of the match and reducing the New Zealand innings to 101 for 7, before a belligerent association between Kyle Mills and Ross Taylor raised the visitor's total to a less embarrassing score.

Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and chose to field, citing the assistance that may be available for the Bangladesh fast bowlers following several days of rain in Mirpur. He did not take long, though, to bring the spinners into the game, allowing the two seamers eight overs between them before taking them out of the attack. Shafiul Islam had removed the dangerous Brendon McCullum in the first over of the match, but Jesse Ryder and BJ Watling quickly settled into building a decent foundation for the visitors, picking up regular singles and twos and making the most of the bad deliveries during the Powerplay.

The introduction of the trio of left-arm spinners had an immediate impact on the game, slowing down the New Zealand run-rate and inducing an error from Watling, who fell attempting to hit over mid-on in the 14th over. Ryder also departed soon after, holing out to deep midwicket for 33, to give Suhrawadi Shuvo his first wicket of the match. Grant Elliott was then bowled by a superb Shakib delivery that broke sharply, and the incoming batsmen were finding it heavy going against a disciplined Bangladesh attack.

Taylor attempted to rebuild, first with Daniel Vettori, who gave Shuvo the simplest of return catches after making 9, and then with Shanan Stewart, who fell to same bowler few overs later. It wasn't until Kyle Mills came to the middle with New Zealand in absolute tatters at 101 for 7 that Taylor was able to make a real impact on the game, combining with the tailender in an explosive 72-run partnership that restored some respectability to the innings.

Taylor was typically strong on the leg side during the batting Powerplay, slamming three sixes and two fours to bring up his fifty in 66 deliveries, after having been on 20 from 56 before the fielding restrictions came into play in the 37th over. A Rubel Hossain over leaked 17, one from Abdur Razzaq cost 13, and Kyle Mills also joined in, hitting two huge straight sixes off Shakib. The batting Powerplay had proved productive for New Zealand, with 55 runs coming in the five-over period, which was the only time during the innings the visitors held some sort of control over the game.

Despite the expensive period for the hosts, it was business as usual following the wicket of Kyle Mills, as Mahmudullah dismissed Tim Southee and Andy McKay with successive deliveries, ending the New Zealand innings at 173. Ross Taylor remained unbeaten on 62 and the tourists will hope for early wickets in order to prevent Bangladesh from winning two ODIs on the trot against major opposition for the first time in history.
